NEW Student Cell Phone/Personal Electronic Device Policy
The North Star School District is committed to creating learning environments where students can stay focused, engaged, and connected with their teachers and classmates.
The Board of School Directors will consider adopting a new Student Cell Phone/Personal Electronic Device Policy at its August 11, 2026, Regular School Board Meeting.
Key highlights of the proposed policy include:
✅ PreK–Grade 6: Students will not be permitted to possess cell phones/personal electronic devices.
✅ Grades 7–12: Cell phones/personal electronic devices must remain put away and may not be used or possessed during the instructional day (7:50 a.m.–2:45 p.m.)
✅ Students who need to contact a parent or guardian during the school day may do so through the school office. Likewise, parents may contact their child through the school office whenever necessary.
✅ A progressive discipline process is included for policy violations, emphasizing education, accountability, and consistency.
Research continues to show that limiting cell phone distractions during the school day can improve student attention, academic performance, social interaction, and overall well-being. Our goal is to provide every student with the best possible learning environment while ensuring parents can still communicate with their children when needed.
🗓️ The North Star Board of School Directors is scheduled to vote on the proposed policy at the Regular Board Meeting on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at 7PM at North Star High School.
